Storage Tips
Getting Ready for the Move
Start with collecting packing supplies. Gather as many boxes as you think you might need, as well as tape, markers, labels, and other packing materials, such as foam shipping noodles, bubble wraps, packing paper, or towels.
Great places to gather packing supplies are liquor stores, fast food restaurants, Walmarts and Targets, and other chained stores. You can also use newspapers and old magazines to substitute packing paper.
While we don’t recommend putting too many into one box, you’d want to make sure your boxes hold at least 25-30 pounds. If possible, try to use uniformly sized boxes for easy stacking.
Also, label your boxes on all four sides and number them for easy record-keeping. Make a full inventory list somewhere safe outside of the storage unit.
Protecting Your Fragiles
Start with laying down a protective cover on the floor. If renting a drive-up/exterior unit, use boards or palettes to protect your items from dampness on the cement floor.
Stack fragile, like dishes and glassware on the very top and make sure to wrap everything in paper or bubble wraps. Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked “FRAGILE” and stacked on the ends.
Never store any combustibles in your self storage unit!
Preparing for Long-Term Storage
Instead of plastic sheets, use cardboard or blankets to cover your stuffed furniture for dust-proof. Wipe any metal surfaces, such as bikes, hardware tools, and metal tables, with machine oil to prevent rusting.
Finally, if you stand mattresses on their sides, prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.
Making the Most Use of Your Storage Unit
Plan your storage space to make the most out of it. Always rent the smallest space you’ll need and pack it all the way full.
Start by putting TVs and other electronics in the rear of your unit, followed by sofas and loveseats with cushions wrapped in plastic and placed on top. Large paintings, doors, tables with removable legs, and mirrors can be pushed to the four sidewalls, as long as they’re protected.
Now you can begin filling up the space. Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other. Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, knick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels, or blankets to prevent breakage.
Finally, try to leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit for easier access. Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation. Make sure to cover your appliances and furniture with towels or blankets for protection.
And don’t forget to always place items that you may need to access often in the front of the unit.

What size unit do I need?
Use our visual sizing guide or interactive storage calculator to determine the best unit size for you! Meanwhile, below are some popular unit sizes people use for personal storage:
- A 5’x5’ unit is about the size of a medium closet, and can hold chairs, small desks, bookcases, lamps, or other small items.
- A 10’x10’ unit is about half of an average bedroom, ideal to store items from a studio, or one-or-two-bedroom apartment.
- A 10’x20’ unit is similar to a small one-car garage, and can hold everything from an average-sized house or be used to store offseason vehicles.
Most of our units are about 8’ tall. Multiply the dimensions by eight for estimated cubic footage, but actual sizes may vary.
